Proactive Policing and its Effects on Crime What I hope to learn from this research is to have a better understanding of how proactive policing impacts communities and what role it has on crime. While initially researching community policing and its effects on violent crime, I found out it is specifically a type of proactive policing. The subject of community policing and its effect on violent crime was too specific a subject to research. The recent police misconduct cases with local communities led me to question how effective proactive policing is and what benefits its practice had on crime. I found there has been very little research done on this subject and the research done is from decades old data collected from larger cities where the majority of violent crime is committed. The worldwide influence of proactive policing led police administrators to implement the program as it was considered â€Å"the most popular trend in policing the past few decades† (Sozer and Merlo 506). The United States began its implementation of proactive policing in larger American cities in the 1970s and it eventually spread throughout the country as the way to conduct law enforcement. The spread of this type of policing was influenced by the 1994 Violent Crimes Act and led â€Å"to the increase of community policing at the national level. The Morality of Abortion On the question of abortion being moral, the answer is clearly that terminating a fetus life under certain circumstances is not only moral, but it is also our responsibility to terminate it if the quality of life is in question for the fetus. A second major reason is that to declare abortion immoral would mean that we would have to consider the factor of how the conception came about. This cannot and should not be done. Quality is a major factor in the question of the morality of abortion. When parents decide to keep or not keep a baby the issue of adoption does not play into this. The reason for this is that once the baby is born that the parents may change their mind if they want to keep it. I offer you the explanation that the circumstances surrounding the pregnancy can be deemed moral or immoral, but the fetus and therefore the abortion cannot. The outcome was an accidental meeting of a sperm and an egg in both instances. The moment of conception does not assemble a human the instant that the egg hits the sperm, it takes a full nine months. During this gestation period parts develop slowly, not all at once. Science has determined when the cut off is that a fetus can think and feel etc... If it were impossible for us to know when a fetus could feel and think than the obvious answer would be that it is immoral, but we can tell and therefore it is not. I think that it is important to remember that morals can be established for a society in particular, such as abortion in immoral, but cannot be changed by the context of how the pregnancy occurred. Either the termination of life is moral or it isnt. By this line of reasoning you can follow me to the logical conclusion of this paragraph. Salvador Dali: Vision of Hell Surrealism was the 20th century phase in art and literature of expressing subconscious in images without order or coherence, as in a dream. Greatly influenced by Freud’s Interpretation of Dreams, he tried to enter the subconscious world while he was painting, in order to fathom subconscious imagery. To this end, he tried various methods. For example, he attempted to simulate insanity while painting and he tried setting up his canvas at the base of his bed to paint before sleeping and upon rising. During this period of his life certain images repeated themselves in his art: eyes, noses, bones, crutches, clouds, mountains, blood, soft bodies and/or objects. In â€Å"Vision of Hell†, all of these symbols are found. Called cliches by some, here they seem to be much more than a trite convention. They are an expression of Dali himself. Too, Dali uses the techniques of double images, hidden appearances, and counter appearances. It is important to note that although in the early 1960’s Dali’s art was pejoratively classified as â€Å"academic†, â€Å"religious†, and â€Å"mystic†. Despite the fact that often excluded from the company of Surrealists, Dali deliberately chose the lapse into his previous surrealist style to accomplish the portrayal of hell (the left side of the painting), while his newer style of â€Å"Religious Mysticism† is used on the right side of the painting in the portrayal of Our Lady of Fatima. The central image in the painting is that of eight carving forks, that, in the form of a circle are piercing a body that, typical of Dali’s earlier period, is soft. The parts most visible in this human form are the left chest, the left arm, and the head. â€Å"Vision of Hell† is Dali’s vision portrayal of death. Whenever an artist seriously approaches the subject of death, expect profundity. When this part of the painting is placed side by side with Dali’s famous birth painting, the comparison is startling. Both bodies are curved in a type of fetal position; there are large drops of blood; the arm, the navel and the breast are the central focus of attention. Dali as well as other surrealist painters was greatly influenced by the Dutch painter, Hieronymous Bosh. The burning buildings shown in the top left of Dali’s painting closely resemble Bosch’s burning building in hell, and interestingly, Dali also picks up from Bosch’s inferno the image of the tattered flag, as well as a rectangular structure from which emanate four rays of light. In his earlier, much more famous works, Dali frequently employed crutches in his paintings. He, himself, says he finds the crutch to be â€Å"the significance of life and death†¦ a support for inadequacy. The orange/red spirit, shown escaping from the pierced body in â€Å"Vision of Hell†, has two crutches, one under or on each breast. They seem claw like. Clutching. Salvador Dali often hides images and faces within his paintings, and many of his works are self-portraits. There are three places in this painting where it seems Dali is porting himself. First, in the polymorphic body and second in a whimsical face that appears in a puff of smoke in the lower left center part of the painting. However, there is another face, hidden face, composed of an eye and a nose, which dominates the painting. The dominant face in â€Å"Vision of Hell† can be found by focusing on the black drops that appear in the middle left side of the painting. These black drops, if seen as tears falling from a closed eye, anchor the position to see a bushy black eyebrow above the crying eye, the inside edge of which is being pierced by two carving forks. If one perceives the eye, then the large white nose, which too is being pierced by carving forks, appears. The hidden face is composed of an eye crying black tears, a bushy eyebrow and a large nose, all of which closely resemble Dali’s own features. This dominant and tormented face, floating in the air, recalls the lines which Dali used to inspire the painting: â€Å"plunged in this fire were demons and souls in human form †¦. Rose into the air by the flames that issued from within themselves † (St. Lucia’s Description of hell). Dali chose to sign his name prominently in the middle if the painting. Could it be that â€Å"Vision of Hell† is not only a portrayal of the vision of hell seen by the three Sheppard children but, also a portrayal of Dali himself, tormented and crying? Is a serious portrayal of death, such as this, a minor work?

The Problem with Grammar Check The Problem with Grammar Check The Problem with Grammar Check By Mark Nichol A couple of years ago, a visitor to this site posted a comment asking for help. In a Word document, this person had written the sentence â€Å"The nouns and verbs are the main content words in this poem and without emphasis on them, this poem has little to no meaning.† Word’s grammar check admonished the writer to insert a semicolon in place of the comma following them. What? Errant nonsense, and puzzling advice, at that. One respondent erroneously agreed with Bill Gates, while two people associated with this site validated the original writer’s reluctance to follow Word’s word. But they didn’t explain why the grammar check had recommended this faulty course of action. I didn’t understand it, either, but then I looked a little closer. As another poster remarked, a human editor trumps a computer-generated one. Computers may be able to defeat humans at chess, but I doubt they’ll ever beat people at editing. Why? They can compute, but they can’t think. Here’s where Word went wrong: It assumed that the phrase â€Å"in this poem and without emphasis on them† was a compound phrase with the same structure as â€Å"on this page and on the next,† for example, and that this sentence could end with this phrase. If that were true, â€Å"this poem has little to no meaning† would be an independent clause that could stand on its own. But because the computer misread the context, it did not admonish the writer to correct a real error: A comma should follow the first instance of poem. The correct form of the sentence is â€Å"The nouns and verbs are the main content words in this poem, and without emphasis on them, this poem has little to no meaning.† (I also agree with the poster who pointed out that the phrase at the end of the sentence is more idiomatically correct rendered as â€Å"little or no meaning.†) In this sentence â€Å"this poem has little to no meaning† is not an independent clause, but it is part of one: â€Å"without emphasis on them, this poem has little to no meaning† could stand as a separate sentence, so it should be preceded by a comma and the conjunction and.† The moral of the story? Word’s grammar check, like its spell-check function, can be helpful, but it can also misinterpret your intent as a writer.
